Free-thinking contrarians who questioned whether there really was a lion generally didn\u2019t last long enough to pass on their genes. (And if they weren\u2019t eaten, well, they were the kinds of personalities that probably struggled to find a mate anyway.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So going with the flow is pretty much how we\u2019re wired. Seth Klarman put it well: \u201cThere is comfort in consensus; those in the majority gain confidence from their very number.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But as all the investing greats have observed, what is comfortable is rarely profitable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When an idea feels obvious, safe, and universally praised, the good news is mostly already in the price. It might be the right view, but backing it doesn\u2019t offer much of a reward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And being different for its own sake is just as risky. In fact, it\u2019s worse. The world is round, the sky is blue, and water flows downhill. Having a variant perception on something that is almost certainly true is just dumb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of the time, the consensus is on the money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You need to have a view that, as Howard Marks puts it, is both different from the consensus and right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A clear and accurate read on something genuinely non-consensus is a gift, provided you can find it, defy your herding instincts, and hold steady in the face of ridicule and doubt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is one thing over a few days or weeks, but quite another over a series of years. Maybe the market\u2019s volatility won\u2019t shake you out, but it can easily wait you out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not easy.
