Essentially, unless you were investing like Buffett, you were a degenerate speculator on a path toward certain wealth destruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Momentum traders, technical analysts, and every other flavour of &quot;investor&quot; were at best misguided fools, or outright charlatans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ah, the hubris of youth. So certain, so absolute, so&#8230; wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over time, I&#x27;ve come to realise there are plenty of ways to skin the investing cat. There is no one &quot;right&quot; way to do it, and no approach that is objectively superior. Each strategy and style has its own strengths and weaknesses, and each is suited to different conditions and, importantly, different personas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Any investing approach is only as good as the human wielding it, and different people are suited to different styles. It&#x27;s not so much a question of which strategy is best, but which strategy is best for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And figuring that out is a hell of a journey. One that is as much about self-discovery as anything else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking back over my time as an investor, it&#x27;s amazing how much my process, beliefs, and attitude have evolved. I&#x27;m pretty sure my younger self would hold a very dim view of the way I do things as an older man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sure, I can throw around a Buffett quote with the best of them, and I genuinely embrace all the big ideas. But the reality is I invest very differently to how Buffett advocates. Not because I have a better way, but because I found a way that is better for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The investor I am today is almost unrecognisable from the investor I was when I started. In fact, the same is true of Buffett himself, whose current MO is vastly different to what it was when he founded Buffett Associates Ltd in 1956.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To change is to grow, and to grow is to change. Right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chance that we hit upon the exact right strategy on day one &#8212; suited both to our temperament and to the broader conditions we find ourselves in &#8212; is vanishingly small.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Investing has a way of teaching you who you really are. Only in facing an uncertain future, taking on real risk with real consequences, and experiencing the crushing depths and euphoric highs, do you discover your true temperament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sadly, there is no way to speed-run figuring out who you are as an investor. Experience really is the best teacher, and making all the usual mistakes is just part of the journey. It&#x27;s painful, but incredibly valuable if you can internalise the right lessons, and stay honest enough to separate dumb luck from a strategy well executed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What matters isn&#x27;t the temperament you have, but knowing and accepting it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you don&#x27;t handle volatility well, steer clear of day-trading FX contracts. If reading annual reports bores you silly, just go with an index ETF. Or, if you&#x27;re a starry-eyed dreamer who needs the potential of a 10-bagger just to feel alive, it&#x27;s totally fine to swing for the fences occasionally!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whatever type of investor you are &#8212; or think you are &#8212; write it down. It&#x27;s the best way to clarify a mess of thoughts into a coherent shape, and it serves as a North Star to keep you on the straight and narrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I did the exercise recently, though I cheated a bit. One advantage of writing a weekly blog for many years is that I could ask an AI to read it all and tell me what kind of investor it thought I was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, whether or not I practice what I preach is up for debate (although, let&#x27;s not). But I feel it at least captured the intent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here&#x27;s what it said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Temperament: Ego is the real enemy. Strong opinions, weakly held. Fine saying &quot;I don&#x27;t know,&quot; using a too-hard pile, writing theses so hindsight cannot rewrite the story. Accept bruising drawdowns as the cost of aggression, but refuse ruin. Endurance beats brilliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Philosophy: Compounding is powerful, try not to interrupt it. Quality and ROIC first, but at a price that makes sense. Focus on what will likely happen as opposed to what has already happened. Asymmetry is explicit. Hit rate is secondary to payoff skew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Research: Understandability, moats, incentives, falsifiable milestones, red-flag literacy. Read widely, ask simple first-principles questions, then place the bet knowing certainty never arrives. Strawman is a challenge engine, not a tip sheet. Simple beats clever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Style: A concentrated book that will not look like the index. Neglected ASX inefficiency and underappreciated growth potential. Patient waiting, then decisive size inside my lane. Stubborn with winners. Ruthless when the thesis breaks. Independent (variant perception), not difference for its own sake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To be clear, I&#x27;m not advocating for this particular way of thinking. Or any, in fact. The best investing approach in the world is useless if it&#x27;s not aligned with who you are. It&#x27;s simply the direction I&#x27;ve moved in over time because, for whatever reason, it resonates with me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But I encourage you to think about the kind of investor you are&#8230; because the market can be an awfully expensive place to find out.
